FEATURED PRODUCTS: Boysenberry Juice Concentrate
The boysenberry, a glossy, large, juicy fruit, is actually a crossing of blackberry, raspberry and loganberry.
Its development is attributed to a Rudolph Boysen in the 1920s. They were developed on his northern California
farm and were being widely marketed by the 1930s.
While blackberries are black and raspberries are deep red, boysenberries are dark with a tinge of purple. They
have smaller seed and are more fragile than the blackberry. Other differences are that boysenberries grow
horizontally compared to the erect type of blackberry and the fruit is rounder, like a large marble compared
to the pine cone shape of blackberries.
When comparing the nutritional content, some say that boysenberry has more nutritional value than the blackberry.
A 100 gm of boysenberry comes with 50 calories to the 43 calories of a 100 gm blackberry. The boysenberry fruit
also comes with less fat than the blackberry. The carbohydrate value present in 100 gm boysenberry (12.19 g) is
more than what is present in 100 g blackberry (9.61 g).
Boysenberries are very rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese, folates (B complex, folic acid) and are a good
source of dietary fiber. At 83.1 mcg of folates per cup (132 grams), fresh boysenberries are a very good source.
A typical portion of boysenberry would deliver an adult about a fifth (20%) of their daily minimal needs of folate.
