Also known as Dragon's Eye, this fruit (Dimocarpus longan) is closely related
to Lychee. Also tropical and subtropical, the Longan tree is grown in
the lowlands of China. Fruits vary in size, but are usually about the size of a
very large grape. The thin yellow-brown skin encloses a translucent white
pulp surrounding a single dark seed, hence the name "Dragon's Eye."
The fruit is canned or dried, mostly over open fires. This is how the fruit
takes on a smoky flavor. All parts of the plant can be employed for a variety
of beneficial uses.
