FEATURED PRODUCT: Roselle Juice Concentrate
Roselle ( Hibiscus) is a native plant from India to Malaysia, where it is commonly cultivated, and must have been
carried at an early date to Africa. It has been widely distributed in the Tropics and Subtropics of both hemispheres,
and in many areas of the West Indies and Central America has become naturalized.
Roselle Juice Concentrate (Extract) is produced from the dried calyx of the plant. The Hibiscus plant is mainly grown
in Southeast Asia and Central America. It is harvested in November and December. Roselle is popular when used in a
cooling, lemonade-like beverage called Jamaica, as well as sauces, syrups and jams.
Profile
- Very deep red color and tart flavor profile
- High in Iron, Calcium and Niacin
- Roselle is reported to have high anthocyanin content and anti oxidant properties, which are important in free radical absorption in the body.
- The plants are rich in anthocyanins, as well as protocatechuic acid. The dried calyces contain the flavonoids gossypetin, hibiscetine and sabdaretine. The major pigment, formerly reported as hibiscin, has been identified as daphniphylline. Small amounts of myrtillin (delphinidin 3-monoglucoside), Chrysanthenin (cyanidin 3-monoglucoside), and delphinidin are also present.
Today, roselle is attracting the attention of food and beverage manufacturers and pharmaceutical concerns who feel it
may have exploitable possibilities as a natural food product and as a colorant to replace some synthetic dyes.
