Onions are vegetables that are closely related to shallots, leeks, garlic and chives. Onions come in various colors, and have a very sweet and earthy flavor when cooked, but give a dish an almost spicy flavoring when consumed raw. The origin of the Onion is uncertain, as the wild Onion from which most Onions derive are now extinct, but most experts pinpoint the origin of the vegetable as eastern or western Asia.

- Onions were used as a form of currency in the Middle Ages- they were often used for goods, services, and to pay rent.
- Onions have the reputation of being tearjerkers- this is due to the fact that when onions are freshly cut, they release a gas as a defense mechanism, and the eyes tear up as a reaction.
